How to Read Your Explanation of Benefits (EOB)
Your EOB from insurance isn't a bill, but it tells you a lot — including whether the hospital is charging you the right amount. Here's how to read it and cross-check it against your bill.
Key Sections of Your EOB
- Billed Amount — What the provider charged
- Allowed Amount — What your insurance agreed to pay for that service
- Insurance Paid — What your insurance actually covered
- Patient Responsibility — What you owe (copay, coinsurance, deductible)
Common EOB Issues
Compare your EOB to your hospital bill. If the hospital is billing you more than the "patient responsibility" on your EOB, something is wrong. Also check for services that appear on your bill but not on your EOB — those may not have been submitted to insurance.
