Your Patient Rights — Billing Protections You Should Know

You have more legal protections than you probably realize. The No Surprises Act, balance billing rules, and debt collection limits all work in your favor.

The No Surprises Act

Effective since January 2022, this law protects you from surprise bills when you receive emergency care or are treated by out-of-network providers at in-network facilities. You can only be charged in-network rates in these situations.

Balance Billing Protections

In many states, providers cannot "balance bill" you for the difference between what they charged and what insurance paid, when you used an in-network facility.

Medical Debt Collection Rules

Medical debt under $500 can no longer appear on your credit report. Paid medical debts are removed. And hospitals must offer financial assistance information before sending bills to collections.
