Medical Debt Help
If medical bills are piling up, you have more options than you think. Recent rule changes give you new protections, and there are real ways to reduce or settle what you owe.
New Credit Report Protections
As of 2023, medical debt under $500 no longer appears on credit reports. Paid medical collections are removed immediately. And new medical debt can't appear on your report for at least one year, giving you time to dispute or resolve it.
Options for Reducing Medical Debt
- Apply for hospital financial assistance (even after the fact)
- Negotiate a settlement with the collection agency (they often accept 30-50% of the balance)
- Request a payment plan — most hospitals and collectors offer zero-interest plans
- Check for billing errors that would reduce the amount owed
- File a dispute if the debt is inaccurate or already paid
