How to Read & Request an Itemized Medical Bill

The summary bill the hospital sends you isn't enough to check for errors. You need the itemized version — here's how to get it and what to look for.

Summary Bill vs. Itemized Bill

The summary just shows a total or broad categories. The itemized bill shows every individual charge with CPT codes, dates, and specific descriptions. This is what you need to find errors.

How to Request It

Call the billing department and ask for a "fully itemized statement" or "detailed charge breakdown." They're required to provide it. If they push back, reference your right under HIPAA to access your billing records.

What to Look For

  • Duplicate charges (same CPT code billed twice)
  • Upcoded visits (billed at a higher level than what happened)
  • Charges for supplies or services you don't remember
  • Facility fees that seem disproportionate
  • Charges that don't match your EOB from insurance
