Hospital Financial Assistance & Charity Care Programs
Every nonprofit hospital has a financial assistance program, and the income limits are higher than most people think. Here's how to find out if you qualify and how to apply.
Who Qualifies?
Income thresholds vary by hospital, but many set them at 300-400% of the federal poverty level. For a family of four, that can mean household income up to $120,000 or more. Even if you don't qualify for a full write-off, partial discounts are common.
How to Apply
Ask the billing department for a financial assistance application. You'll typically need proof of income (pay stubs or a tax return) and family size. Some hospitals accept applications retroactively — even after you've already paid.
Your Rights
Under the ACA, nonprofit hospitals must make their financial assistance policies publicly available, provide written notice of assistance programs before billing, and cannot use aggressive collection tactics before determining if a patient qualifies.
